Law School Facts

There are several advantages and disadvantages to consider when deciding whether to apply to a part time law program. Obviously the part time program will take more time to graduate with your law degree, however you will have a little more free time to pursue other interests most notably working. In full time programs, 12 units or more, the ABA does not allow students to work more than 20 hours per week (ABA Standard 304). Therefore, if you need to work to support yourself or family you may want to seriously consider a part time program. You will also want to see if the school has a part time program as many well known schools do not offer part time programs. Usually a part time program means you will have to take 9 units per semester as well as a certain amount of units during the summer. Part time programs usually take 4 years to complete, rather than the 3 years for full time programs.

You may want to consider a part time program if your combined LSAT and GPA is below the median for the law school you wish to attend as the part time programs often have lower median GPA's and LSAT scores.
