Frequently Asked Questons
There really is no best place overall to attend law school. However, there may be a best place for you to attend law school. Remember you will have to live in the area surrounding your law school and cost of living may be a large factor for you. For instance it is very expensive to live in Manhattan and attend New York University (NYU) School of Law although NYU is one of the top law schools in the nation. If you attend a school in an expensive area you may need to take out a signficant amount of private student loans to pay for room and board, depending on your financial situation, and you will end up with a large amount of debt after law school. If this is the case you may want to consider attending law school in an area that is less expensive to live in.
Another consideration is that you may find it easier, or difficult (see below), to obtain a legal position near the area you attend law school. For a law school that caters to local residents you will most likely find that it is easier to obtain a position near the law school because most of the alumni, who want to help their fellow graduates, work in the legal community near the law school. However, if the law school has a bad reputation or reputation for producing some ill prepared attorneys then you may find that it is much more difficult to obtain a position near the law school. For instance, there are Human Resource Managers for law firms that have stated they once they notice on a resume that the applicant is a graduate of the local law school with a bad reputation they will no longer consider the applicant for employment based entirely on that delineation. Of course this is not true with respect to all the law firms in the area as many of the alumni work at law firms in the area and this position is not rational as law school graduates should be evaluated individually; nonetheless this situation does exist in some areas. Therefore, it is important to find out the reputation of the law school before you decide to attend the law school. This may prove to be a difficult task, but with a little research you should be able to get a feel for the school's reputation. If the law school does not have a great reputation in the area and it is difficult to obtain a position in the area you still may want to attend that law school if you desire to work in a legal community far from the school where the law school does not have a reputation and most in the legal community know very little about the law school.
If you plan on attending a law school that caters to local residents with a great reputation in the area you will find it much easier to obtain a position after graduation in the area. Therefore, it will be beneficial if you want to live in the area near the law school. Although you may take any bar exam and work anywhere in the country if the school is ABA accredited.
Remember, you will probably live near the law school for 3 years. Therefore, you will want to choose a law school in an area you can, at the very least, tolerate. Depending on the law school you may not be able to enjoy the area surrounding the law school therefore do not plan on moving to "Paradise" to attend law school. Law school will most likely take up much of your time. Although, it is often helpful and a great stress reliever to be able to go to the beach or a nice park etc. to get away from the stress of law school even if it is just for a brief period of time.
